Rosemary Essential Oil Uses
The refreshing scent of rosemary feels stimulating and uplifting – and science also shows that it can improve your mental performance! The scent of rosemary oil has also been shown to decrease levels of stress hormones, and can stimulate hair growth and help maintain hair health.
Like lavender oil, the scent of rosemary oil has been shown to significantly decrease levels of stress hormones in the blood. But rosemary oil, unlike lavender oil, actually increased alertness and mental performance in research subjects!
Studies have found that scenting a room with rosemary oil improves students' performance on memory tasks, and that the oil's aroma has similar effects on the brain to some medications used to treat Alzheimer's disease. This may explain why rosemary has been associated with memory since ancient times – Hamlet's Ophelia cites “rosemary, for remembrance” when she is giving out flowers!
A few drops of rosemary oil can be added to a diffuser to scent a whole room. For those who prefer a more tactile experience, a few drops of rosemary oil can be added to carrier oils to create a bath preparation or home-made lotions and massage oils.
A few drops of rosemary oil added to a tablespoon of inert carrier oil such as jojoba, coconut, or castor oil can also create a nurturing treatment for the scalp, which will re-enforce the hair's natural protective oils as well as stimulating more hair growth. Rosemary oil may also nurture skin on other parts of the body, and massage oils or lotions containing rosemary may be beneficial to minor skin irritations.
Although the rosemary plant is edible, rosemary oil should not be ingested because it contains a high concentration of rosemary's bioactive compounds. Like all essential oils, rosemary oil should be kept out of reach of children.
